Volunteer Spotlight: SHANNON!

Writer's picture: Sarah DavisSarah Davis

Shannon not only runs our farm division, but is the force behind creating the farm division and making it possible. Shannon and her amazing wife Fran live on the farm full-time. When not farming, Shannon and Fran love jeeping and camping. She has been involved with the Directors of this rescue for over 20+ years!

Her background prepared her for a life of rescue, as she was a vet tech for 25+ years and has always loved animals (her mom has a fun story about secretly saving and hiding ducks in her room as a youngster!) She worked high volume spay/neuter and emergency medicine.

She’s a long-time foster for cats and dogs with head traumas, neurological issues and the medically needy. Shannon used to go out of state for animal rescue during national disasters, and when Fran and Shannon first started dating, their first out-of-state experience together resulted in bringing 23 cats back in their car. That was Fran's “feet in the fire” introduction to rescue.

The farm has always been her dream and in 2021, she learned about BLM, Bureau of Land Management - an organization that does horse herd management. They run an adoption program for wild Mustangs from overcrowded, overgrazed land, where they round them up and adopt them to the public. These horses are a lot of work, as they need proper care and to be worked with to be gentled to become a domestic horse. Not everyone who adopts has the capability to truly care for them, which explains why they end up with us. Since 2023, we have taken in 7 of these beautiful creatures, and have successfully rehomed 4 so far.

Our farm rescues fall under Shannon's guidance as to who will be a farm ambassador, and who will be eligible for adoption.

We currently have:

  • Possum, an American spotted draft (an ambassador)

  • Moose, the mule (she is in hospice care with us, sadly. Her owner passed away unexpectedly and after 3 days at the farm, was diagnosed with cancer.)

  • Gemma, an 8-year-old mini horse who will be available for adoption

  • Sierra, a Morgan horse that is a new arrival to the farm (completely smitten with Moose).

  • Rocky and Lily are both ponies, and both ambassadors.

  • Fiona, a mini donkey, an ambassador, and one of the first to sign up to go to off farm events, like schools and meet and greets. She thinks she's a dog.

  • 3 Burro sisters - they found themselves in our care after being rounded up by BLM, and are currently being gentled and will be available for adoption.

  • Fancy, a 7-year-old mustang - she was a lead mare, and once gentled, she will be available for adoption.

  • Sunshine, 3-year-old mustang, born in holding and available for adoption.

  • Elko, Shannon and Fran's personal wild project, a mustang who has been gentled and makes a great ambassador showing off when wild becomes domestic.

6 pigs:

  • Poppy, the OG, and an Ambassador, the one who started it all.

  • Moana and Puaha, they came together and unknown to us. Moana came to us pregnant and gave birth to 7 babies, 5 of whom have been adopted.

  • We still have Pumba and Tuff for adoption.

4 cows:

  • Buccee - the highland mini cow ambassador

  • Kenya - a Watussi mother cow

  • Zuri - Kenya's baby, half Watussi, half mini highlands

  • Chick Fil A - Holstein cow (who came with 2 goats, Lila and Luna, and 2 sheep, Dolly and Miley)

3 bunnies - Honey Bun, Cinnabon, and Mini Bon Bon, all available for adoption.

1 tortoise - Blossom. African Spur Thigh

And ducks (some available for adoption).
